Among my cohort and younger it's just been a given that SS as our parents knew it wouldn't be around for us.

These poll numbers may just reflect a changing of the generations.

Good point, and you have to keep in mind that most people are not interested in "politics". Most people are just busy enjoying their lives. That's one of the reasons the mainstream press is still so influencial. Most people get all their news from sound bites while walking through airports or using the stairclimber.

With regard to social security. As long as George W goes waaay out of his way to ensure senior citizens their benefits won't be effected. It's a winning issue.

Because the young instinctively know it makes sense. They're not afraid of the stock market the way many older people are.

Actually you are wrong. You were the one the other day that was intimating the ignorance of the American people, stipulating that it was necessary to use multi media embellishments to get their attention and have them "understand", like small children. I said that if there is any ignorance out there, it is a willful ignorance. In other words, when people decide that something impacts their lives seriously, then they pay attention. The poll that Michael cited supports that view.
