The Yallop book is interesting, but it takes too many turns down blind alleys. Doesn't Yallop infer that Cardinal Cody of Chicago had something to do with the murder of John Paul I? No doubt Cody was arrogant, ("I don't run the country, but I do run Chicago") but to implicate him in the murder of the pope is ludicrous. He might be right about the involvement of Cardinal Jean Villot and Bishop Marcinkus, though. I have the book in storage, I'll have to go dig it out. If my memory is correct, Calvi was the main man the Vatican turned to in financial matters. His position with the Banco Ambrosiano Group combined with his dealings with Licio Gelli and the P-2 Lodge make for an interesting story. Then there are the Exocet missile sales and offshore accounts...it reads better than a Frederick Forsyth novel. To respond to a couple of your points - The Mafia, as you call it, may exist in Italy, but here it's a shadow of its former self. Our most famous mobster, John Gotti Jr., is reduced to selling steroids at his gym and shaking down local grocers. P-2 Lodge is on a par with Opus Dei, Knights of Malta, and other Chivalric groups? Opus Dei (the Escriv cult) are decent dedicated people. My dentist on the east coast is Opus Dei, I think very highly of him. He is a warm gentle soul. The Knights of Malta have a glorious history, and you may not like them because they tend to come from aristocratic families, but do you really think they hang around thinking of ways to extort money and have people whacked like the P-2 does? Most people who belong to Chivalric groups are hopeless romantics, it's puzzling that you see a threat there. This is the weekend when Americans are supposed to memorialize our war dead. It also marks the "official" beginning of summer. I'll be sure to do my patriotic duty and go shopping.
