Pete,

After age 30, my body weight increased by 50%, despite the fact that I was running 30 miles a week.

I discovered that my problem was due to eating dairy products, and in particular pasteurized dairy products. (Pasteurization destroys enzymes essential for digestion.)

I have lost most of the weight, but I understand that it had nothing to do with willpower, and everything to do with information.

I strongly suggest that you look for solutions outside of the traditional medical community. Doctors are not trained in nutrition, or about the underlying causes of disease. Good luck!

All food is not devoid of nutrients. If it was, No one would live or "Get Fat". I am a FAT person. I just happen to like food. Before I graduated from college, I was 143 pounds at a height of 6'3". During the period just after college, around 21 or 22, something switched in my body. I started to gain weight eating the very same things and quantities I did before, if not less.

Pete,

So that you know scientists have categorized humans into different body types and then have determined the best diets for those types. I would suggest you consult with a knowledgable physician and determine your body type and the best foods for you. Then consult with a physical trainer as to the best exercise for you and work with that trainer.

I say all that because a few years ago I gained significant weight (30% over my normal weight) for the first time due to allergies and the asthmatic reactions they triggered. The asthma discouraged almost all physical activity and I went from working out daily to nada. I have since lost most of the weight and am getting my asthma under control. I think the thing that most affected me was the realization of how much mobility I had lost when I was heavy. And how much working out reduced stress and boosted my immune system. I never realized that a 30% weight gain made everything, and I mean everything, very difficult. In other words, you give up a lot to be over weight.

And one other thing, loving to eat food does not me you have to be overweight.

ted

I experienced a weight gain a few years when I developed allergies that triggered asthmatic reactions

pgerassi. Well, in the good old days you ate all you could because there might be a famine any time soon and all you could live on would be stored fat. I see you are well prepared for the meteor strike that will give darkness for three years.
However since this is not likely to happen I would suggest you try the following. try 2-3 hard diet days per week. By hard diet I mean no fat or flour products and lots of broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes and no more than 3 ounces of lean meat, fish or chicken for 1 day then normal diet. Try 3 if you can do it and make sure you do not bounce back with a huge feast after the hard diet day. With a diet like that it is easy to do since you can eat a lot of lettuce, broccoli, tomatoes and other very lean veggies, fill yourself to avoid the empty starved feeling the usual diets give you. Range widely among the vegetables, buy expensive funny leaf lettuces and other vegetables. You are not after economy, you are after survival after 50(risky at 350 Lbs). Avoid all beans, corns, flours, fried foods etc on those diet days.
2 days means diet-eat-eat-diet-eat-eat and 3 is more or less diet-eat-diet-eat-diet-eat on a day by day basis.

It is easy to diet for 1 day. then the next day eat normally and avoid any catch ups and then diet again.
Since you are at a steady state at 350 on the ~50% diet cycle(3 diet days per week) you will probably lose 1 pound per week, esp if you up the walking a little. After a year you could be down 50 and it is painless since you will evolve two sets of foods, both of which you like and the fatty food is just a day away. the important thing is to stay pure diet for the diet days.
After 2 years you will be at 250, after 7 years you will vanish.
