Historically, the OS was evolving at the driver level so far - MSDOS (dos based drivers)-> Win3.x (16-bit drivers in user mode, 32 bit in kernel mode -> Win95 (32 bit drivers - no uPnP) -> NT (32 Bit drivers IRP based drivers) -> Win2K, Win98 (32 bit drivers supporting plug and play).

At this point, the driver model is robust and flexible. Something UNIX doesn't have. At some point, a particular technology matures. For drivers, the time is now for Microsoft. IMHO.
