The LATimes published a good piece on AlGore the Junior's lack of real service. They provided the Junior with body guards to keep him out of trouble. AlGore the Junior even got to go home at his own request.

Interesting story. I myself would not be surprised if the answer is that he thought he had nothing much to do, and then turned around and tried to make up lost time, but absent more information, that is speculation........
