From the HLIT thread: Advent Networks. Does anyone know about them? The website is all hype for now...... adventnetworks.com See also: newsbytes.com Advent Intros Successor To DSL, Cable Modems By Steve Gold, Newsbytes AUSTIN, TEXAS, U.S.A., 23 May 2000, 7:43 AM CST A new company, Advent Networks, has taken the wraps off a "last mile" broadband system that it said knocks the socks off DSL (digital subscriber line) and cable modems in the Internet speed stakes. Known as Ultraband, the technology is said to be up to 50 times faster than DSL and cable modems - and up to 1,000 times faster than the analog modems that most of us access the Net with. Advent said that UltraBand will allow upgraded cable operators to differentiate themselves with new premium services, increased market share and additional revenue opportunities, leading to the creation of a new generation of products. The leapfrog technology runs at a zippy 40 megabits per second (Mbps) over suitable network connections. Geoffrey T. Tudor, the firm's CEO, said that speed gives DVD-style levels of video quality to users, despite the fact that the technology costs the same as DSL and cable modems to deploy. "You simply can not get this quality of bandwidth from any other solution," he said, adding that UltraBand enables CD-quality music and DVD-quality streaming video-on-demand at speeds 50 times faster than today's broadband systems. Advent said that with a dial-up modem, it would take a week to download a DVD movie whereas with UltraBand, it would take only 13 minutes to download. With a broadband connection, meanwhile, it would take about 18 hours. Now the technical stiff - the technology is based on Layer 3 Switched Ethernet over HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) open architecture with scaleable bandwidth from 40 Mbps and above. The UltraBand platform is normally co-located at the edge of the last mile of the network and has the capability of providing a dedicated (i.e. not shared), channel to each user. The platform supports bandwidth intensive content delivery with content management, profiling, caching and network management. Robert Rankin, a spokesperson for the firm, told Newsbytes that Advent will unveil its Ultraband technology at the Morgan Keegan Broadband Video-on-Demand Conference, which takes place today in New York.
