Paul, I am glad you brought up the issue that Novell's sales in their large enterprise accounts (thoses with MLAs) did not erode. This shows commitment from the enterprise customers. - the ones that invest more per capita into Novell technology than any other channel. The Channel "red box" sales were the big problem and one that could be fixed if Novell starts - get ready for this surprising message from this board - ADVERTISING DAMMIT!!! The MLA accounts know everything about Novell and their technologies. They have a huge investment in Novell (if they like it or not), and with respect to technology, Novell has not let these companies down. These companies actively look for Novell directions, advances, and new offerings. Its all those customers that are not heavily committed - if committed at all - about Novell technologies which Novell must make themselves known to. Advertise in the high visibility (although expensive) media. And - I will repeat another suggestion - if Novell knows they have a better technology then their competitors, nothing attracts any media than a good fight or challenge. That is what Novell needs - for someone in media to pay attention to them. If Novell offers a public challenge in say eDirectory, ICS, NetWare, etc. to its competitors with even a prize offered, then it will be very hard for the media to resist a great fight. This sounds rock-em - sock-em but that is what Novell has to do to get noticed. Stop rolling over and playing dead. I also hope that Novell, in an attempt to reduce costs over the coming months, does not crawl into its shell and become gun-shy on promoting new ventures, getting into new e-Business or ASP/ISP initiatives, and continuing its growth activities. What we dont need now is a company that puts its hands over its head and cover up. This would - IMHO - only further spiral the PERCEPTION in Wall Street that Novell is falling into demise. One thing I also really hate is back in early May during the pre-earnings warning, Novell Executives stated that the Window2000 was one factor for the problem. A REAL STUPID MOVE in my opinion. Novell has spent well over a year convincing the market and industry that Windows2000 would not have any bearing on eDirectory sales. Well, in one simple and quick statement, Novell has destroyed the whole message they pains-takenly developed! Sorry but that was just plain Stupid and I dont agree it was even true! But, now the damage is done and Novell Execs have convinced the market that Novell might have been wrong this whole time. Great! With all that being said, I still am an optimist and believe that Novell will somehow correct their channel sales. I think these past 3 weeks as a HUGE kick in the butt for Novell. The leads to these 4 new divisions will be the focus for intense scrutiny. I would have liked to see more positions for these 4 groups headed up by fresh blood. I think Novell needs fresh and aggressive blood to push these marketing groups to deliver, but lets see how the divisions headed up by Novell vets fare. Final word - look how NOVL stock price fared with the NAZ taking another punch in the face. I think that is an indication that not many investors want to bring this stock down too much lower as I believe we are seeing basically the floor price of this stock. MHO Cheers! toy
