Well, Orange County had no significant impact on the system overall. And I question your use of the word legitimate; banks are in the business of taking and distributing risk, after all. But I agree that better disclosure on both sides of the equation is highly desirable. I do not wish to imply that derivatives pose no risk, systemic or institution-specific. But I disagree with the notion that derivatives in and of themselves pose an outsized threat to the overall financial system -- a proposition with which I suspect many on this thread will disagree.
