Donato certainly wanted to keep the child in his immediate orbit, for reasons which he has not shared, but at which his behaviour gives some hint. The citizenry has generally accepted the notion that law enforcement is sometimes an ugly business, and that coercion must at times be used to force compliance. Most people complain when coercion is used against those with whom they agree, and applaud when it is used against those with whom they disagree. The best remedy, of course, would be for people to obey the law, which would make the resort to force unnecessary.
