By the time the Bay of Pigs was conceived, the Miami Cubans had already lost Cuba, and we had no obligation to win it back for them, especially since it was lost largely through their own greed and ineptitude.

Castro took over from Batista in January of 1959, two full years before Kennedy was inaugurated. Kennedy did not take Cuba from the Batista crowd and give it to Castro, by any calculation. Unless he did it as a senator, which would have been a neat trick.

Steven's already responded well but i'll add this - The Bay of Pigs failed due to lack of popular support on the island ... the memory of Batista was fresh, there was new promise in the land, and the average person supported Castro ... and the Miami bunch didn't help their case much by bombing civilians at the very start ... they came across as bandits, and ya know, in the benefit of fourty years of hindsight and further history that's how they still look to me.
