westes, the comparison is fair from the PoV of the progression and subsequent unwinding of investment manias. looking back at the turning point in the Nikkei, most Japanese economic data at the time were almost exactly similar to the US economic data now (with the exception of the trade balance and the savings rate) and Japan's economy was thought to be invincible. also, the BoJ had just begun to raise rates by 200bps. in order to stop the speculation and the economy from overheating. so we do have quite a few parallels. aside from the fact that the chart patterns of NAZ/Nikkei are eerily similar, proving that there's essentially nothing new under the sun.
