Pat - Thanks for the site. The only link I've been able to get to work is "Titanic" - great to hear that song again. There aren't too many stations around that play music like that anymore.

And I was so confident that "Talking Green Berets" was that song. Oh well, the search continues. I've also been trying to get ahold of the Jamie Brockett album, but whenever it's showed up on eBay, the selling price has been a bit too rich for me.

Pat - Eureka!

I may be crazy but I think not
I swear to God that I smell pot
But who'd have pot in VietNam
He said "what do you think you been sittin' on?"
These funny little plants
Good God Almighty - Pastures of Plenty

So we all lit up and by and by
The whole platoon was flying high
With a beautiful smile on the captain's face
He smelled like midnight on St. Mark's Place
Cleaning his weapon
chanting something about Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna

The moment came when it comes to all
That I had to answer nature's call
I was stumbling around in a beautiful haze
When I met a little cat in black PJ's
Rifle, ammo belt, BF Goodrich sandals
He looked up and said "What's the matta wit you, baby?"

He said we're camping down the pass
And smelled you people blowing grass
And since by the smell you're smoking trash
I brought you a taste of a special stash
Straight from Uncle Ho's victory garden
We call it Hanoi Gold

So his squad and my squad settled down
Passing lovely stuff around
All too soon it was time to go
The captain got on the radio and said
Hello, headquarters...hello, headquarters
We have met the enemy and he has been smashed

It's kind of funny how you can find things on napster. I was downloading a tune from someone whose username was intriguing so I put him on my Hot List to see what other songs he had to share. Lo and behold, one of them was Tom Paxton's "Talking VietNam Potluck Blues". Now I'm not the brightest guy in the world, but it immediately occurred to me that maybe that was the song. The quest is over.
