hi ed,

congratulations on your soon-to-be dell! <g3>

i don't know that i can contribute significantly to your quest to offset some of the latency...

but let me link you to the specs on my new machine from 6 months ago (wow! time flies!) #reply-11851624

i wonder if the 13.6gb ibm ultra ata hard drive (7200rpm)and ata66 controller card might not be a place to look, rather than cpu and ram? maybe not. <g3>

anyway, just wanted you to know that i am very satisfied with the machine i 'built' with dell.

and i'll add that i think performance enhancements can definitely reach a point of diminishing returns, particularly when folks begin beefing up ram. i'd be happy, for instance, to be running 256mb instead of 128mb. but to go with, say, 512mb, well, that might begin to create a whole new set of problems.

let us know what you decide!

:)
