RNWK--RealNetworks and nCUBE Enter Software Licensing and Distribution Agreement to Provide Broadband Video-on-Demand Solution Agreement Enables On-Demand Delivery of Scalable, Breakthrough Quality RealVideo 8
PR NEWSWIRE - May 24, 2000 06:00
SAN JOSE, Calif. and FOSTER CITY, Calif., May 24, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- RealNetworks(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), the recognized leader in media delivery on the Internet, and nCUBE(R), Corp., the leading provider of streaming media hardware and solutions, today announced a strategic marketing and distribution agreement to integrate nCUBE's award winning MediaCUBE 4 video-on-demand (VOD) streaming platform with RealSystem(TM) 8, RealNetworks latest breakthrough streaming media server software which provides service providers, enterprises, and broadcasters with the most complete, scalable server infrastructure.

The coupling of RealServer(R) and MediaCUBE 4 delivers a robust, high bit rate streaming media platform that supports the RTSP/RTP streaming media standards, and delivers high quality RealVideo(R) 8 content to consumers. The new product being offered by the two companies will provide scalable streaming of video at speeds beginning at 200 kilobits per second up to multi-megabit rates. With the inherent ability to scale to tens of thousands of simultaneous users, this ground breaking solution will allow end subscriber networks such as Telco's, cable MSO's (Multiple System Operators), network providers, and ISP's (Internet Service Providers) to deploy an economical broadband steaming media VOD system that meets the demands of their subscribers.

"We're thrilled that nCUBE, with eight years of success in video delivery, has chosen to integrate RealSystem 8. nCUBE's support of RealSystem 8 accelerates the adoption of broadband deployment and enables a wide range of new business models," said Jeff Pancottine, senior vice president, Media Systems, RealNetworks, Inc. "nCUBE and RealNetworks coming together on RTSP/RTP standards-based servers means that customers will be able to access a wide array of compelling, broadband content."

"Soon, millions of homes will be connected to the Internet over high-speed connections, whether they are DSL, cable modem or satellite," said Michael J. Pohl, nCUBE president. "Network providers are clamoring for a scalable and economic way to deliver video to meet the skyrocketing demand for streaming broadband content. Our relationship with RealNetworks opens up enormous opportunities for network and content providers who will soon be faced with the challenge of how to deliver massive numbers of video streams."
