Look at the context of that event in 1998. The interest rate environment was VERY DIFFERENT! That's all we have here: an overheated economy and a FED that's going to raise rates to slow it down. that didn't exist in 1998.

Also in 1998, the semi cycle had bottomed and started going up. Much of this NAZ rally and general euphoria was generated by chip, chip equipment stocks starting a new cycle and optical stocks getting on the radar screen for many investors as a new area for "future vision".

Once we get balanced and get the hints of interest rate rises slowing or ending, we will stop dropping and move up.

It can't be that simple, but if earnings aren't too affected by the interest rate rises, I really think it could be.
