My perception: Six months or so ago the consensus seemed to be that at the turn of the century either the world would end or, at the very least, demand for computers would collapse because everybody had bought extra computers for testing Y2K preparedness and all that extra horsepower would suddenly become available for other tasks, obviating the need to buy any new machines. Even mighty IBM had subscribed to the latter opinion. On January 1 the world didn't end, and Sun has continued to grow revenues and earnings; it has been reported recently that they're on (the revised upward) target for this quarter.

Short term interest rates were somewhere around a point lower then than they are now, but long term rates weren't much different. There wasn't much inflation then, and there isn't much now. Unemployment was low then, and remains so.

Yet SUNW is selling for about 10 bucks a share less than it did in December. I find that amazing.

Edit: have been a big winner before but taxes and now losses leave me in a poor state. Tried big and lost big. wiil be back again as always.
