slacker-re: Korean subscribers & subsidies...

>>>10 to 20 million subscribers in 14 months

The number of mobile phone users reached the 10 million mark in June of last year and doubled in just 14 months. Industry watchers estimate the number of mobile users will reach 25 million at the end of next year, if the current trend continues.

In the first half of this year alone, SK Telecom put in handset subsidies worth 518.5 billion won, followed by KT Freetel (265.4 billion won) and LG Telecom (175.6 billion won).

As demand for mobile phone increases and competition heats up, the opportunity for foreign firms will also increase. Korean wireless companies are seeking wireless technologies and equipment that would increase their competitiveness.<<<

Yes, old news about the on & off Korean subsidies. QCOM's IR department said there is no material effect on Q's revenues or earnings.

5/23/00 - Qualcomm passes 100 million MSM chipsets shipped

SAN DIEGO, May 23 (Reuters) - Mobile phone technology company Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM .O) said
Tuesday it had shipped more than 100 million Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets and software,
passing a major production milestone.

The company said in a statement that the landmark showed the sharp growth in production of MSM
chipsets since 1996, when less than a million chipsets were shipped.

Chipsets are the sets of microprocessors that make mobile phones work. Qualcomm's code division
multiple access technology is at the forefront of a new generation of phones.

Shares in Qualcomm, among Wall Street's highest fliers last year, have fallen sharply from a record
close of 179 in January. The stock closed Monday at 88-5/16.
