Cheryl,
You keep talking about Win9x security compared to Unix, and yet you evade my direct question about Windows 2000 compared to Unix or Mac compared to Win9x. Windows 2000 or NT compared to Unix is the only reasonable comparison of heavier duty operating systems. Both NT and Windows 2000 have access control lists which are applied to all objects in the system including all files. The actual operation turns out to be quite similar to a permission mask. If you are unaware of this fact, I suggest either an introductory book on NT or perhaps you could take some courses and aspire to become an MCSE :-)

Regarding Netscape on Unix, a process under Unix by default runs with the same privileges as the current user, just as under Windows 2000. That means that a typical user can just as easily have their files trashed or absconded by software entering through Netscape or another browser on Unix as they could on Windows.
