mmeggs --Thanks for posting the article . This sounds very similar to the Fud that DDI was putting out at the first of the month . If they do not put in CDMA to provide competition to GSM it really would sour the effort that has been brought to bear to bring China into the WTO . Wait and see attitude is logical especially since they are getting close to raising the funds needed to build the system . Have a feeling the US government would step in if the capital is being raised in the US was going to use to purchase a different stanard so close to the just completed vote . Would not be good for the November elections

What does not seem to be adequately recognized is that even if China Unicom does not build out a CDMA system at this point, it is almost certain that its GSM system will migrate to WCDMA, along with other GSM migrations to 3G. Thus any negative effect will be mitigated, at least long term.

mmegggs ---note the following :
Passage of the bill late Wednesday afternoon shifts the issue to the Senate, which is expected to take up its own bill to offer China permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) in early June, soon after returning from its Memorial Day recess. The Senate is expected to approve the bill without significant opposition
If I was China Unicom I think i would wait on the bill to pass if I was going to use the money for another system than CDMA

Any credible releases quoted gov't officials have stated to the contrary. UNICOM is going CDMA. Stop the FUD
