There's nothing to stop TI from developing their own SOI process, assuming they don't use any of IBM's patented process steps.

Yes, TI fabs for SUNW, I hear they're quite good. SUNW does design their own chips though.

There's nothing stopping TI, but it would be a lot easier and faster to "rent" than to develop the process.

PS- The feeling I get from the old timers is IBM management is capable of anything and doesn't understand technology, so who knows?
