They are protected to protect the consumer. The bottom
line is this: if there is a monopolist hurting other
businesses but the consumer isn't harmed, who cares?

In the case of M$FT, the consumer has been harmed by
inferior product quality at a price that is artificially
high.

The policy underpinning the law is to protect consumers. The means by which that is done is the protection of competition.

JMHO.
