Here's something that doesn't happen every day: Thursday May 25 5:32 AM ET Philippine Plane Lands Safely After Hijacker Jumpsdailynews.yahoo.com MANILA, Philippines (Reuters) - A Philippine Airlines plane on a domestic flight landed safely in Manila Thursday after a hijacker armed with a grenade robbed passengers and escaped by parachute, a witness said. President Joseph Estrada's spokesman, Ricardo Puno, told local radio the Airbus A330 had descended to about 6,000 feet at the hijacker's request and the man had jumped. ``I think the man was more determined than we thought,'' he said. ``At 6,000 feet, the cabin was depressurized, enabling the doors to be opened, and he jumped out.'' The plane landed safely at Manila airport almost an hour after its scheduled arrival. Government radio earlier reported the A330, capable of carrying 278 passengers, had been hijacked en route from the southern city of Davao to Manila. One passenger said the man also appeared to be armed with a gun and had taken money from passengers. ``He jumped out a few kilometers prior to landing,'' the passenger told local radio. Puno said police had rushed to the eastern outskirts of Manila to search for the man. ``The aircraft has landed. All passengers are all safe... Security is going through the aircraft,'' Philippine Airlines president Avelino Zapanta said. He did not give more details. Industry sources said it was the first hijacking in the troubled country for several years. An off-duty policeman was also detained at Manila's international airport after he was found carrying two grenades as the hijack drama was unfolding. It was not clear if the two incidents were related. The hijacking is the latest in a series of incidents highlighting deteriorating security in the Philippines. The government is battling a growing Muslim insurgency in the unruly south where 21 mostly foreign hostages have been held for more than a month now, and a spate of bombings had hit the capital in the past two weeks.
