When you have hundreds of billions of neurons connected to each other you have a possible interconnectivity approaching the infinite- you can be a materialist and think this- it is directly out of mathematics. This is a probable manifestation of matter (connectivity) that seems to me to be completely non-trivial.

This HUGE number of internal states could certainly explain the self. Not that it DOES, but it's certainly a reasonable explanation.
