>Menlo Park, California, May 24 (Bloomberg) -- E*Trade Group Inc., the No. 2 online broker, named marketing chief Jerry Gramaglia as president and chief operating officer, succeeding Kathy Levinson, who is retiring to focus on philanthropy.

Gramaglia, 44, spent more than two decades marketing everything from fruit juice to long-distance service before joining the company in June 1998. In his new post, Gramaglia will report to Christos Cotsakos, chairman and chief executive.

Michael Sievert, vice president of marketing, will now oversee all of E*Trade's marketing and advertising efforts.

A Cincinnati native and son of a former Army cook who started a chain of pizza restaurants, Gramaglia will be responsible for E*Trade operations, international, marketing, and product functions worldwide.

``Jerry Gramaglia is singularly focused on generating top line growth and bottom-line results in everything we do,'' Cotsakos said in a release.

In an industry of big advertising spenders, Gramaglia has been the biggest: the company may spend $350 million this year, more than the biggest online broker, Charles Schwab Corp. In 18 months, E*Trade accounts have increased 600 percent to just under 3 million, trailing only Schwab and Fidelity Investments.

Still, E*Trade shares are down 47 percent this year while Schwab's are unchanged.

Transition Period

Gramaglia assumes his responsibilities immediately, the company said, though he will work with Levinson during a transition period through Sept. 30.

Levinson, who joined E*Trade in 1995, was named president in January 1999. She owned 1.75 million shares as of last Sept. 30, 1999. Those shares would be worth more than $20 million today.

She was paid $920,338 in salary and bonus in 1999, up from $359,661 in 1998.

Last year, Levinson and her partner gave $300,000 to help defeat a California ballot proprosition banning same-sex marriages. Levinson is a director of PlanetOut Corp., an online portal for gays and lesbians.

``Kathy and I have been discussing her growing desire to spend more time on her philanthropic and community service interests,'' Cotsakos said. ``Kathy has been, and always will be, an important member of the extended E*Trade family.''

Levinson holds some of her shares in an entity called the Internet Experience Partnership.

``My particular interests include helping young girls establish strong foundations to prepare them to be tomorrow's leaders, mentoring women entrepreneurs and promoting diversity in the workplace, as well as throughout society,'' Levinson said in a statement.
