Some semi-positive views on THQ from Mr. Lin:

...ING Barings LLC analyst James Lin was a little less reactionary. On Thursday he maintained his buy rating on the company.

Lin told Dow Jones Newswires that Sony has temporarily halted its production of its Playstation consoles in order to facilitate the autumn roll-out of its Playstation 2 system, already available in overseas markets. In response, retailers have materially scaled back game and game system orders, and he sees a bit of a "panic" among video game makers and retailers over the coming two or three months.

Lin still sees a bright future for THQ and similar companies 3DO Co. (THDO), Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. (TTWO), Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS) and Interplay Entertainment Corp. (IPLY), but not until "late summer."

The release of Playstation 2 should herald good news for THQ, along with 3DO and Electronic Arts, both of which have several games ready to launch in conjunction with the new system.

As far as THQ dropping development of projects and the incurred charge, Lin said the company has added staff and facilities over the past three years to focus on internal development mechanisms.

Naturally when such a focus is placed on product development, some must be scrapped, he said, and added that any company, not just THQ, that dares to put out a new, "unbranded" title without heavy marketing this summer will "eat" whatever money they put into the product. Better to ditch them now than take a bath twice, he said.

He felt investors had perhaps overreacted in "overselling" the company, but admitted that it will be a volatile market for game makers until Playstation 2 comes to the U.S.
