Beethoven Symphony Notes Sell for Record Sum

LONDON (Reuters) - A page of Beethoven's handwritten notes for his Sixth Symphony sold for a record price of $296,800 at an auction Friday.

The so-called sketch leaf from the Pastoral Symphony was the first from a Beethoven symphony to be offered
for sale for at least 30 years and was bought by a private collector at a London auction. It contained numerous drafts for the last movement, particularly for the opening theme.

``The price, more than double the top estimate, was a record for a Beethoven sketch leaf,'' said a spokesman for
auctioneers Sotheby's.
