I think Apple can still add 2MB of L2 cache if they want to. The new chip is raising the L1 cache which I think is at 64K on the present G3.

Re: "I wonder whether these have any pipeline redesign at all or whether it's a pure process shrink and maybe SOI??"

I believe the 700MHz G3 is a simplified variant of the chip IBM is selling to Nintendo. 700MHz would represent the fastest bin split in .18um groundrules while the 400MHz Nintendo part would represent the slowest bin split. So,
there has been NO pipeline redesign and this represents a simple process shrink along with moving the L2 cache on chip. This design is still limited by the 4 stage pipeline and has NO future. Same old - same old. I would guess that the release of this chip means that Moto must be almost ready with the 700MHz+ G4e. I guess that would be good news for Apple if Moto can get them to say 900MHz soon. I heard a rumor of IBM doing a single core Power4 for Apple. They would have to add Altivec and redesign the memory bus among other things. But that design will certainly be capable of 1+GHz operation in .18um groundrules on SOI. I believe the pipeline is 15 stages. The Power4 is scheduled to appear some time next year. But I can't see any Apple redesign taking precedence over the dual core Power4. So I wouldn't hold out too much hope near term. It appears that Moto doesn't care how long they take to release the G4e at .18um.
I originally thought they would do the right thing and
let AMD fab it to give Apple a competitive product by now. Wrong! .13 um groundrules will probably appear in manufacturing by mid next year. So, you could see a 950MHz G3 from IBM in .13um groundrules by next summer. But of course, Intel and AMD will be over 2GHz by then. Has anything changed?? I think not.
