I agree that the world needs more vicious vixens. Have you managed to change any minds on the Elian thing? Chris and I have been arguing about it for months, and finally had to just agree to quit talking about it because neither one of us was making any progress to convincing the other. I am feeling pretty hurt that even though he says, "let's agree to disagree," he really thinks my position is sick. He says sending Elian back to Cuba is like putting a Jewish kid into a concentration camp. When I finally convinced him that the Attorney General did not break the law, he started saying that in 100 years people will look back on this like they do on the Dred Scott decision. There are just major differences in projection (edit: I meant perception, but I think projection is an interesting Freudian slip in this context). He thinks Cuba is a hell-hole for every Cuban citizen. I agree that some people are ill-treated in Cuba, but most people are not, except for the poverty caused in part by socialism and in part by the embargo. When I point out that when Elian was in Cuba he was fat and sassy, happy and well treated, that's when he starts saying "let's agree to disagree." He also thinks having school children wear uniforms and go into the fields to cut sugar cane is horrible. I disagree, it's not what I would wish for my children, but I don't think it's harmful. Cuba is NOT America, that is obvious, but that doesn't make it a hell-hole. He also says that Elian's mother was a refugee from Castro, and so was Elian, and that her wishes should be respected. When I point out that no one knows why Elian's mother came here, but most likely it was to be with her boyfriend, and that she brought Elian because she didn't want to live without him, he starts saying "let's agree to disagree." So, no progress is made, and I don't bring it up anymore. At least I was able to persuade him to understand the true facts, what conclusion he draws is his own. I've lurked a bit on the Elian thread, and I don't think you're making any progress, either, but you probably aren't as tired of it as I am.
