Major news was that Goldman Sachs would miss their earnings # for the quarter....The market tanked, especially the brokerage stocks( as you might expect)......selling across the board, it was gross,unless you were short.The S&P futures fell off a cliff as a lot of traders have left for the long weekend.

You have been in this market long enough to know that there is usually no rhyme or reason for anything to happen.

So I'll take a guess.

The TA turned to the sell side and the bears started laughing, which angered the bulls. The bulls stormed out and took all their money with them.
