DSL is an intermediate solution with an approaching obsolescence horizon. The BOCs know this and have avoided being dragged into the DSL mess. PacBell was pulled in by SBC. PacBell dreaded the entry. Fiber obviates DSL and accelerates the approach of the horizon.
