Source: Bloomberg News
Clinton, Mississippi, June 20 (Bloomberg) -- WorldCom Inc., the No. 2 U.S. long-distance telephone company, said it will let users browse the Internet and get Web content with voice commands by phone, using technology from closely held PhoneRun.com Inc.

The PhoneRun service allows customers to assemble their own radio programs, with content from partners including Time Warner Inc.'s CNN, the companies said. It also lets corporations create voice-driven intranets and permits traveling employees to access files by speaking.

Terms of the non-exclusive, multiyear agreement weren't disclosed. WorldCom could offer the service, expected to be available in the fourth quarter, for free. Businesses might support the service with advertising or pay extra for it, said Ron McMurtrie, a WorldCom marketing vice president.

''The service would be useful for anyone that has access to a telephone,'' McMurtrie said in an interview. ''Our model's not necessarily based on generating wireless minutes across the network that we own or the wireless network that we aim to own.''

WorldCom, based in Clinton, Mississippi, resells other companies' wireless services. It has agreed to buy Sprint Corp. for $150.5 billion, mainly to gain control of the Sprint PCS national wireless network. Phone.com Inc. and closely held Tellme Networks Inc. also are seeking to draw customers with voice browsing.

WorldCom shares fell 1/16 to 41 15/16 in midmorning trading. Sprint, based in Westwood, Kansas fell 1/16 to 59 15/16. PhoneRun, based in Boston, has a partnership with Lucent Technologies Inc.
