Chic,

What would you think about a Bush/Greenspan presidential ticket? The Naz would probably hit 10,000 on the news.

Bush could then raise interest rates in countries he had never heard of before!

Ted,
RE:"He said they weren't really worried about what the fed was doing, but were really worried about the consequences of the MSFT trial. He was saying there is a big fear among traders of what area of technology the justice department is going to target next. They don't like the idea of the justice department setting presedence with MSFT. He seemed to imply that most of the damage done to the markets was because of this trial.

I'm starting to think all of your fear about this trial was well founded. Baruchi is very well respected and his opinion carries a lot of weight"

This is what I've been "obsessed" about. I'm not the only one. Those who hold a vendetta against Microsoft can't see the forrest for the trees, they are blinded by their hatred.
(Lawyers and politicians often use this "divide and conquer" method to forward their agenda and gather support)

Like Microsoft or not, what we have is the federal government breaking up a company because they are too successful, basically at the request of it's competitors AND consulting the same competitors about the penalties.
The competitors are now suggesting a break up of Microsoft into 3 companies ather than the two Judge Jackson was considering. This is extremely dangerous.
Certainly, AMD, TI, NSM, SNDK, SSTI, SUNW etc would love to tell a Judge just how to break up INTC. Or a bunch of neworking companies would love to tell a Judge how to break up CSCO...
I'm sure you can see the implications. Wall Street is well aware of what Lawyer meddling can do to markets. They don't like it.

Jim

I don't think that's true at all as it just doesn't seem to fit with what we are seeing. Who would be the next logical target for that kind of action? Only one that comes to my mind is INTC who's share price seems to keep moving in a good direction despite tons of bad news, a huge multiple, and slowing growth. Most of the companies I've seen that got nailed to the wall are the ones with weak/no earnings.

I think while AMD's forward multiple is impressively low, it's trailing multiple (the one you get from any research site) is very poor, and less experienced investors aren't making the connection. Don't look for this to change anytime soon either unless we have an absolutely huge 2nd quarter (which seems possible, but isn't a certainty). If we earn $1.50 it only puts us at $2.33 for the trailing 12 months which is still a trailing multiple of around 43 if we are at $100. (not bad, but not overly impressive compared to peer stocks). The huge multiple shift will come in the 3rd quarter when we can erase that -.76.

What a crock. Microsoft is a very special case. ISV's from all over the country have been begging the states to do something about Microsoft for years.

There is absolutely no indication that the Feds are thinking about going after anyone else. The last time this happened was AT&T 20 years ago.

I'm just back from golf with Paul. Paraphrasing Paul, "inflation is caused mostly by energy costs. Raising interest rates will accomplish nothing, except possibly a recession."
