Any advice out there as to what to do.

My advice is to quit kicking the cat.

As you may remember, I broke my ankle in December, so I can relate to your misfortune. Hope you feel better soon. Time is of the essence in such matters.

Taped your toes together?! - What is she, Kathy Bates in 'Misery'?! - My wife's a nurse and she would have given me DRUGS ...and a beer ...and a sandwich ...and a little lower, baby - careful of my toe... --- But then, I wear SHOES. :) -JCJ

Dear JDN: I know what you are going though, having broken the big toe on both feet at separate times. You wife is correct--nothing can be done--but my toe was not taped to the others either time. That sounds as if it would make the pain worse.

If you are attempting to wear regular shoes, forget it. The only semi-comfortable footware is either Sorel boots, worn without socks (in winter, the kind with the thick felt liners) or sport sandals. Style #6811, the second pair, looks almost identical to the Merrell sandals I wore until my toe healed:

tevasandals.com

What's nice about this style (from any company that makes them) is that the velcro straps are not near the toes. At the same time, they give great support--I used to use my sandals for climbing up and down steep, rocky stream banks (to go fishing) before I needed them for "medical" reasons.

If your toe hurts when you go to bed, try wearing the sandal (and buying a second pair just for bed if your wife has a fit). The sandal will keep you from inadvertently bending your toes while you sleep or putting pressure on it from the bedding (if you sleep on your back).

In addition to the sandal recommendation, here's a good one for icing you toe: Ask your wife to go to the supermarket and buy a bag or two of frozen peas. Instead of ice, use a bag of the peas. When done, just put it back in the freezer until the next time you need it.

If you normally wear socks, try to find some 100% wool ones, preferably a size larger than usual. The style of sandals I suggest can easily be adjusted to accommodate socks.

Good luck. Please tell you wife good luck, too!

Best regards,

Lynn
