Neo,
I also think there is some confusion that the existence of a soul is fused to the concept of life after physical death. I believe that eternal life for the soul is a factor in my life, and that of most, if not all, Christians. But I still believe the soul does exist outside of any theological concept. Maybe, calling this balancing mechanism, a soul, sets people off in the wrong direction. Wild animals live a life primarily controlled by the instinct to survive and that supercedes every other possible alternative. Domesticated animals seem to know that they can expect food and shelter as a part of their existence and, for the most part, do not unreasonable object to being expected to fulfill their part of the tacit bargain. Humans have a mixture of controlling emotions and underlying causes for certain actions and reactions. I believe that, what I am calling a soul, is responsible for the differences in humans and animals. I know it amounts to more than just brain capacity and an opposing thumb. Biology has given fairly concrete evidence of that.
