It is the problem--a blessing and a curse--of having an "old" family and a large one. We were so blessed for so long that it's a shock now--especially for the cousins' children who are, some of them, under the age of ten. It's been one a year since 1995--the poor kids might as well have grown up at Haworth parsonage for all the cheer this must bring them. Yet we cousins had humor and closeness and laughter to see us through. Tonight's joke--thought of simultaneously and separately as a way of dealing with what does one say, was "We must stop meeting like this. The dead bodies are going to give us away."
