If you're interested in this subject, you might want to follow the columnist, William Raspberry. I've been reading his column religiously for a good 25 years. He speaks to this subject all the time, is one of the wisest heads I know, and has a way of expressing things so middle-class white folks can understand.

Some people just don't want to move, or even to travel ... strange as that may seem [it's strange to me] ... but many don't ... family ties and familiar surroundings are more appealing to them ... it's hard for me to see how that might apply to US 'project culture', but it likely does, eh ... much easier to see how a cubano would rather not leave his country, though even there i would advise him to consider alternatives.

As for television - i don't think it's the medium for education ... it doesn't encourage the mind to work ... quite the opposite, its input acts as a substitute for thought.
