Well, Java is very much the ultimate 4GL environment when you combine the language with all the goodies: 2D and 3D graphics, large set of standard GUI components, database aware components through JDBC and so on. Better yet, it's object-oriented, multi-threaded, secure, portable and designed for distributed environments. It can be very simple, yet you can write very sophisticated applications with it. With Linux on the rise, Java is looking even more promising.

The other explosive area for Java is Java Server Pages and that is really just starting to take off. There are only a couple of books on Servlets and JSP but by the end of this year it they will be talking about JSP at Wall Street power lunches. It's takes a combination of servlets, XML, HTML, EJB and J2EE technology to put together an e-commerce solution. JBuilder is almost as important as having a J2EE compliant Application Server, such as BEA Systems has. I wonder if that's why they aren't promoting JBuilder? They probably see Inprise as a serious threat if management were to get its act together.

I would also like to know what the deal with Oracle is: how much cash does INPR get from licensing JBuilder to them for the Oracle Application Server suite? Oracle is dead in the water without this tool, going forward. BEA would be unstoppable if they bought INPR. Inprise could make that happen with a low-end keyless app server -- I like to say keyless rather than turnkey, it's even better than turnkey!

I have never had much hope for Inprise but these JSP/J2EE technologies have changed all that. Watch JSP nuke ASP in six months. Java caught up to Veebee and JSP will do the same to Microsoft's Captive Server Pages.
