DJN: DJ Efficient Networks Chmn Sees Profitability In September

BARCELONA (Dow Jones)--Efficient Networks Inc. (EFNT) said Friday it expects
to be profitable in the quarter ending in September.
"The analysts have us in the September quarter operationally profitable
before deferred compensation and goodwill," Efficient Networks' chairman
Mark Floyd told Dow Jones Newswires.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a convertible-bond conference sponsored
by Credit Suisse First Boston.
Efficient Networks, which makes high-speed digital subscriber-line
equipment, recently called off a $905 million deal to buy privately held
Web-security developer NetScreen Technologies Inc.
"(NetScreen's) business model is moving up toward the back end of the
network which we don't play in," Floyd said.
Instead of an acquisition plan, Efficient Networks will license NetScreen's
DSL equipment and security services, such as firewalls, which allow secure
Internet connections.
"I get the license and technology I need without spending 5.2 million shares
to acquire it," Floyd said.
He also said Efficient Networks will continue to look for buying
opportunities in the marketplace. Efficient, in May, bought Network
Telesystems, a provider of broadband client services software, for 400,000
shares of Efficient stock, or about $19.4 million.
Efficient Networks has posted a 93% sequential growth rate for the last six
quarters, and in the six months to June 30 the company posted $80 million in
revenue, Floyd said.
Efficient Networks' biggest client is SBC Communications Inc. (SBC) and
also works closely with Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF).
"We work not only with Telefonica in Spain but also in their input in
Central and South America," Floyd said. "We sell mainly to phone companies
worldwide."
