ISP's are not the phone lines or the infrastructure they embody. They are not the backbone of the telephone network, they ride atop it.

Good insight. What is happening is that @Home is emerging as the network you described above and Excite is attempting to become the service that utilizes premium infrastructure to bring a truly differentiated service to the consumer. @Home will succeed. Excite may succeed. If Excite succeeds in pushing the BB experience to being more than faster downloads then they will drive competition at the service level and at the same time they will validate the @Home network model. If that were to happen you would see ridiculous advances in stock price. Noone else has invested in the end-to-end infrastructure like @Home.

If the Excite effort to invest and develop a different service the entire Internet content community has no choice but to follow...and fast.

Now THAT would be good for ATHM share holders.
