My point is that the Japanese overbuilt their manufacturing base in the 1980's and it compounded the downturn. Much of that capacity is still underutilized.

Compare that to the Internet where supply is constrained on the equipment side, book-to-bills are all over 1, and providers of broadband access are stretching to meet demand.

I currently have PacBell DSL. SBC Corp, PacBell's parent is certainly not capital constrained. I called this week to transfer service to a home we bought. They said that I would have to wait until November because the central office serving that neighborhood is unable to meet additional demand (the neighborhood has been developed since the 40's, so it not a development issue). That's not overcapacity.
