Below from John S. Herold, Inc. In counter to this view, Simmons & Co. says that the oil companies can only buy back so much stock and repay so much debt...then they need to spend on services. Every day at these juicy oil/gas prices bring the day closer to Boom 2000 (ya'll didn't think we were there yet, did you?)

CAPEX STILL UNDER CONTROL
Those notorious spendthrifts, the mid-sized E&Ps, mostly have been staying true to their promise of greater capital
discipline. During the first quarter, 17 out of the 23 in the group actually spent less than cash flow. Outlays were
even more carefully controlled among the large producers. Quite possibly, there will be limited oil service cost
pressures and the year 2000 could show finding costs in line with last year?s favorable results. Value creation
appears to be on-going, which could extend the gains for E&P equities.

Roebear,

Re: charting indicies. Try Bigcharts using the "Custom Time" setting for the time frame parameter. It seems to work for S&P and DJIA. Looks like the XOI wasn't put together until the 80's.

Roebear,

bigcharts.com

If you go to bigcharts you will meet with some success in turning back the clock. I've done this for the '87 dip on occasion. Go to custom charting, hit timeframes and pick all data ... then you'll know what timeframe you can do. NEXT a nice feature, under time scroll to the bottom and pick custom. You can then set dates, obtaining a meaningful chart for any timeframe in the data for any non-intra-day frequency you choose.

Some data goes back to 1970.

Enjoy,
Bill
