Limtex, your analogy to the tech standard competition in Europe as "a war" strikes me as being very appropriate. There are huge dollars at stake, and fortress Europe is more than a little paranoid that the tech-savvy Yanks will beat their brains in (again) but this time in the one tekky industry that they believe they owned: cellular. Ergo, this one really is shaping up as a big time rumble in the jungle. I mean who really gives a flying fig about bananas anyway? So let's look at it like a war.
Let's see, in the far corner we have Europe. In the near corner, the USA. Anybody who has had the intestinal fortitude to read my posts (and god bless both of you) knows I'm not exactly a jingoist when it comes to America. But for the life of me I can't see how this is even a contest. For better or for worse, we be the biggest, baddest dudes on the street. Hell, Motorola could tender for Finland (and I don't like BatWing either). Check it out: Nokia is bigger than Finland! But Microsoft ain't bigger than the Department of Justice.
All by his lonesome, Alan Greenspan just locked up the liquor cabinet, sent the band home, and declared the party over. I strongly disagree with using interest rates to do it, and I'm simply stunned that nobody has seriously pointed out that equity valuations ARE NOT IN THE LEGAL PURVIEW OF THE FED (it's the SEC if it's anyone and even that's a bit of a stretch). But guess what? You and I couldn't do diddly-squat about it, and neither could any other stock market in the world, all of which promptly jumped off the same cliff the NAZ did.
Personally, I think this is all Maurice's fault and I warned him just two years ago not to p!ss off Alan, but here we sit (or in my case lie, having tire tracks crudely emblazoned over what used to pass for a 1/2 way respectable portfolio).
Well I think Europe has as much power in this situation as you and me: zip, nada, zilch. You want to play war games? Not with the USA in 2000 you don't. There will be lots of shouting, posturing, and flailing about but at the end of the day our telecom industry is bigger than their telecom industry. Nuts, our anything is bigger than their anything. This is NOT flag waving; it's just the scam what am. Ericcy knew it was game, set, and match and Nokia does, or shortly will.
So relax. The only matter of interest now is to see how the final face saver game plays out for China and Europe. Both will be given a pound of flesh, but the Big Dog's gonna hunt cause there's nobody in the jungle that can stop it. Surfer Mike
