I was talking with my dad day before yesterday, and he said that his cat, who is cute, is "inseperable," from the shelf I built her.

It's out under the carport. Screwed to one of the columns, up high. And stretch-out lounge-sized, and carpeted, with a lean-against back.

The key I think, is that I didn't show it to her.
(Duh.)

But it could be that I'm just a super cat shelf builder.

Nonetheless, it was neat to hear. There's some satisfaction in that. "Isn't that nice."

I don't know why. Why should ya care?

Cats will sleep anywhere! You ever see them out wandering around looking haggard because they can't find a place to sleep? Crying and stumbling? I don't think so. I don't think, in the entire history of American cat-dom, a cat has been kept awake.

So why did I build a carpeted shelf for the cat?

"She'll like this. It will be a good place to sleep."

Her hours of sleeping haven't increased a bit, from 23 a day.

It's moronic.

They twist your mind. Like taffy.

Taffy cats.

<<I am the master of circumlocutions. Creative word replacement.>>

I do that a lot on SI. Spelling is the cause. I couldn't spell cat if you spotted me the C&T. Usually I'm so far off I can't even look the word up.

X and I were talking about this just last week-- or was it two weeks ago.... I was bemoaning the loss of my brain, and she said, don't be silly- we just know so much more than we did when we were young, it's harder to access words quickly.
Which made sense. At least I wanted it to.

My goodness... I'm glad that we've decided to have this little chat here on DAR...

I was beginning to think it was just me-me-me who was having this strange problem with... well... blank spots... little memory blips or holes... where there should be names or words...

It really is a disconcerting thing... because I've always had something of a legendary memory... photographic... especially when it comes to anything to do with art history, or architecture. This applied to students' names as well... I could remember every name and face for a decade and could pull it up on my "automatic recall", even if I met the person in the most obscure and unrelated place...... But this is no longer the case... Eeeeekkk!!! I live in constant terror of drawing a blank and not remembering who someone is and where I know them from...

But even worse, perhaps, are the times when a simple damned word will entirely disappear from my vocabulary for a couple of days, only to resurface at the oddest of times...

Last week it was the word "sentimental". I knew what it meant and wanted to write it, but I just couldn't think of what it was although I was pretty sure that it started with an "s"... This week in was vernacular...as in the architectural sense.... Once again, I knew the first letter was a "v", but zippo on the rest of the word...

However, considering how many things I'm packing in my mental briefcase at the moment, it really comes as no surprise that my hard drive is having a few problems in the memory tree department.... I suppose I should run a system check, and then perhaps call upon Disk First Aid in my Utilities package to patch things up.... but something tells me that there might just be a little breakdown elsewhere... a little leakage around the seams...

Think what I really need is to spread the system overload around... perhaps have myself cloned. Failing this, I think it might well be time for a mega-sized RAM upgrade...

"Sharpchopper with the buttons" - you've definitely got it, too. I don't even try to save face, I just say "thing." The weird thing is that I can describe processes and events in precise, complex detail and have a very large vocabulary - but everything comes to a dead halt while I have to search for a name. I'll be yadayadayada and all of a sudden just stop and look perplexed, and Chris or Ben or Nick or my mother or whoever will say the name of the thing, and I'll say, "yeah," and go on yadayadayada. Most of the time they take pity on me and don't roll their eyes more than a little bit.

Well, ok, so I'm not the only one. Is there a name for what we do, or did we forget it?

I like it. So much nicer than wondering wildly if I'm going senile....
