I didn't offer an opinion before, but I will now. I think the practice is barbaric. It's purpose is to deprive women of the capacity for sexual gratification in order to keep them chaste and to control and diminish them, in general. You can bet it's not practiced anywhere where women have equal rights. It is in no way comparable to male circumcision. In addition, as X says, the way it's done is also dangerous and traumatizing. I'm sure that if you read up on this subject you will find it as disgusting as I do.

I would say that this practice in other countries is no more or no less the business of the U.S. government than is any other human rights violation.
