Why can't one believe in the original teachings and leave Man out of it?

If God is a God worth believing in, then he must be the author of all truth regardless of whether it is found in a Holy Book, an archaeological dig, or a laboratory test tube. I believe that a person should not fear seeking truth wherever it may be found. Man's understanding of truth changes over time. At a given point in history it was considered a truth that the earth was flat. We now know this not to be the case! Much of what was contributed to demons in religious writings we now know as mental illness.

When we discovered a truth that is contrary to our religious tradition, should we not be willing to re-evaluate our tradition; understanding that to seek the truth is to seek God? My faith is built on the freedom to doubt, to question, for it is in questioning and exploring that my faith is affirmed and deepened.

I view the original teachings as a reflection of how our ancestors in faith came to understood their relationship to their God over time, but not as an inerrant document that somehow defines truth for all time. I believe that mankind continues to evolve not only intellectually but spiritually and that one must look beyond the original teachings and actively seek the truth.
