Lucretia Maria Davidson (1808-1825), born into a family raised on poetry, began writing verse herself at the age of 13. Her longest poem, "Amir Khan," tells of a "Christian maiden whose Muslim wooer narrowly averts her suicide." [Feminist Companion[ Her poetry ranges from domestic to patriotic to biblical generally conforming to contemporary sentiments and stereotypes. Yet occasionally, as NAW remarks, there is a startling realistic image arising from a life so closely intermingled with prolonged illness and death. She died of tuberculosis at 17 having already produced a fairly substantial body of poetry. Washington Irving edited the POETICAL REMAINS of Lucretia's younger sister Margaret whose career and early death paralleled the elder while Catharine Sedgwick edited Lucretia's. Reprints of both appeared regularly throughout the 19th century. See BAL 17385 for the 1841 edition. Feminist Companion, 267-268.
