Dan - I agree with about half of your post. The applications company will still be a dominant player, but the OS company looks like a dead duck. That's why I have been harping on the terms of the remedy proposal - they would seem to leave the key MSFT people still able to crank, but the businesses dependent on the OS will be penalized, and they were not even party to the legal action.

I don't rule out the possibility that MSFT actually wanted to get out of the OS business but could not see a way until now. I think that's far-fetched, but events could play out that way. If so, I should probably sell my CPQ and DELL and load up on MSFT and SUNW LEAPs...
