QCOM's desperation was obvious.

Hmmm. Well I do agree that it is important that Q establish asap the superiority of CDMA/HDR over WCDMA. And I'll agree that the place where that is most likely to occur first is in Japan. Given this I don't think Q would have easily "bowed out" of the opportunity that Japan presents in the next year to year and half. Rather than desperation, I would call it insistence on not being excluded.

I don't think it is a tremendous leap of faith to speculate that QCOM did not get the best of terms, given the 11th-hour nature of the deal.

Well we agree at this point that terms of the deal are speculation. Let's not forget that it was the 11th hour for DDI as well.

What I refer to here is simply the leaks DDI made stating that they might go with W-CDMA. I interpret this as a serious sign of disrespect.

Given the complicated vagaries of the Japanese industrial/political system which I don't begin to understand, I'm hesitant to speculate as to what their motives may have been. As to the respect component of their behavior for all I know it may (and let me stress may) have been a way for them to establish their own respect in the eyes of their countrymen. Not understanding the Japanese well enough to make any judgement, I'll abstain from any strongly held opinion.

As to your opinion having made you money, my congratulations. That's certainly what this game is all about.

Hanging around...
