most direct cause, I guess -- but it is coupled with a me-too syndrome, status, etc. People aren't complete fools who take on more than they can pay the service on ... they have lots of help and friends and neighbors who encourage them to "get" what they deserve for working and need to have to be "somebody" ... just like the self-reinforcing frenzy to buy financial assets -- there is a similar culture which begets spending until one is "spent" -- just a different side of the same coin
