people.virginia.edu ... tripped across this ... it's your Memorial day today ... a fine bit of speechmaking from the time when your nation was healing from the war between the states.

Cuba is well out of the Golf of M‚xico where M‚x and the US both produce considerable oil ... i have an acquaintance with Pemex in el DF who says that Cuba likely has economic petroleum, but in nowhere near the quantities that have M‚xico or Venezuela ... fwiw ...

You wonder upthread on a source of latino news in english .... i always point people to Yahoo for that ... their Full Coverage section has several countries listed ... here is the one for M‚xico - fullcoverage.yahoo.com
... click on World, you get this -
fullcoverage.yahoo.com
... then 'more' under the Am‚ricas section ... the side links they give can be extensive ... i really don't know anything better in english [well there is the BBC and CNN, not to be ignored]

Fujimori is now clearly a dictator, eh ... it will be interesting to see how the world treats him.

Sadly Canadian money is developing Cuban oil fields, airports, hotels, gold prospects and infrastructure.

You'll enjoy this speech by the Cuban ambassador to South Africa. The quote from Joe Slovo is priceless "If socialism is not the answer, then there is no answer." there is little chance for a future, Castro has seen to that.

the oil industry has never shown any hesitation when it comes to dealing with world leaders

I think than it's safe to say that private industry aren't the best organizations to safeguard freedom. I once saw that the Canadian gold company, Cabo Ventures, got shafted in it's dealing with Cuba on a gold exploration contract. Don't know all the specifics but there not in that business anymore.

As far as China, those leaders will do whatever it takes to stay in power. They proved it at Tinanmen and will do so in the future. It's sad to see that China views even non-political religous organizations as a threat.
